The right lip balm for your lips

Dry and cracked lips are annoying. They can be painful and look unattractive. Proper lip care is therefore essential, yet it is often neglected. The skin of the lips is particularly sensitive due to its thin structure and therefore requires special attention. Our Lip Balm provides effective relief.

Why is it so important to look after your lips with a lip balm?

Dry and cracked lips are a common and frustrating problem. They can be painful and may appear unattractive. Proper lip care is therefore essential, yet it is often overlooked. The skin of the lips is particularly delicate due to its thin structure and is therefore especially susceptible to dryness and environmental damage.

There are countless factors that can contribute to dry lips. During winter, many people—both women and men—struggle with this condition. Cold temperatures combined with dry indoor heating create an environment that promotes moisture loss and dehydration of the lips.

However, lips can also become dry during summer due to heat exposure. In addition, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation without adequate protection may even result in sunburn of the lips.

Nutrition can also play a role. For example, a deficiency in vitamin E may contribute to dry skin, including the lips. The small cracks that can develop due to these and other factors make the lips more vulnerable to pathogens and external irritants.

Once the lips become severely dry, the condition often persists and may not resolve easily without proper care. At that point, using a high-quality lip balm becomes particularly important. Choosing the right formulation is essential, as unsuitable products may further aggravate dryness.

Dry skin and dry lips can also be associated with various dermatological conditions or certain medications. In persistent, severe, or unclear cases, consultation with a dermatologist is strongly recommended.

The ingredients used in lip care products should be carefully selected to meet the specific needs of delicate lip skin. A wide range of oils and lipids are available for the care and prevention of dry lips due to their moisturizing and protective properties. Some well-known examples include:

1. Jojoba Oil

  • Properties: Jojoba oil closely resembles the skin’s natural sebum, allowing it to penetrate deeply and provide long-lasting hydration.
  • Benefits: Rich in vitamin E, it also possesses anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe dry and cracked lips.

2. Coconut Oil

  • Properties: Coconut oil is known for its excellent moisturizing capabilities and its ability to soothe and support skin regeneration.
  • Benefits: It contains lauric acid, which has antimicrobial properties that may help prevent infections. (It is sometimes criticized for environmental sustainability concerns.)

3. Shea Butter

  • Properties: Shea butter is rich in vitamins and fatty acids that provide intensive nourishment and hydration.
  • Benefits: It helps strengthen the skin barrier and protects against further environmental damage.

4. Almond Oil

  • Properties: Almond oil contains high levels of vitamin E, fatty acids, and proteins that nourish and soften the skin.
  • Benefits: It has soothing effects and may help reduce itching and irritation.

5. Avocado Oil

  • Properties: Avocado oil is rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins A, D, and E, which penetrate deeply into the skin and support regeneration.
  • Benefits: It helps stabilize dry and cracked lips and improves skin elasticity. (It is sometimes criticized for environmental sustainability concerns.)

6. Beeswax

  • Properties: Beeswax forms a protective barrier on the skin, helping to retain moisture without clogging pores.
  • Benefits: It also offers anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that support skin protection and repair.

7. Olive Oil

  • Properties: Olive oil is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E, which help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals.
  • Benefits: It provides intensive hydration and helps restore the lips’ natural moisture balance.

8. Cocoa Butter

  • Properties: Cocoa butter contains high levels of saturated fatty acids that help lock moisture into the skin.
  • Benefits: It has a soothing effect, softens dry lips, and helps protect them from further damage.

9. Lanolin

  • Properties: Lanolin is a natural wax derived from sheep’s wool and is highly effective at retaining moisture.
  • Benefits: It forms a protective barrier that helps preserve hydration and protect the lips.
  • Note: Lanolin may be unsuitable for individuals with known Type IV contact allergies or certain chronic skin and wound conditions.

10. Hyaluronic Acid

  • Properties: Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring moisture-binding substance that attracts and retains water within the skin.
  • Benefits: It can significantly improve lip hydration and volume while helping to prevent cracking.

11. Highly Purified Hydrocarbons

Highly purified hydrocarbons such as Paraffinum Liquidum (liquid paraffin) and Vaselinum Album (white petrolatum) are important ingredients in the treatment and care of dry lips, particularly in pharmaceutical formulations.

A) Paraffinum Liquidum (Liquid Paraffin)

  • Properties: Paraffinum liquidum is a highly refined mineral oil commonly used in cosmetic and skincare products. It is colorless, odorless, and forms a protective film on the skin and lips.
  • Benefits: It helps prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by sealing moisture into the skin. This keeps the lips soft, smooth, and protected from external influences while providing long-lasting hydration.

B) Vaselinum Album (White Petrolatum)

  • Properties: White petrolatum is a semi-solid mixture of purified hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. Pharmaceutical-grade petrolatum is highly purified and well tolerated by the skin.
  • Benefits: It forms a water-resistant barrier that locks in moisture and protects the lips from drying out. It is particularly effective for the treatment of severely dry and cracked lips because it creates an external protective layer that helps prevent further damage while supporting the skin’s natural recovery process.

Both substances are widely used in skincare products that require intensive protection and strong barrier function. They are especially beneficial in cold, dry, or windy environments where the lips are exposed to increased moisture loss. Due to their dense consistency and occlusive properties, they effectively reduce water loss and support skin regeneration.

The oils and lipids listed above may be used individually or in combination in lip care products to nourish, protect, and help prevent dryness. This list is intended as an example only and does not represent the full range of ingredients available for lip care formulations.

How does our lip balm care for your lips?

Our LPB® Lip Balm helps restore and maintain the natural lipid and moisture balance of the lips. It effectively nourishes even very dry, heavily stressed, and irritated lips, leaving them soft, smooth, and comfortable again. To achieve this, it contains a carefully selected combination of ingredients, including:

  • Aloe Vera
  • Cera Alba (Beeswax)
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Carrot Oil
  • Magnesium Sulfate
  • Corn Oil
  • Almond Oil
  • Sunflower Oil
  • Shea Butter
  • Urea
  • Vitamins A and E

Aloe vera is renowned for its intensive moisturizing and soothing properties and has been used for skincare purposes for more than 6,000 years.

Jojoba oil is naturally rich in vitamins A and E, both of which are essential for maintaining healthy, resilient, and supple skin. In addition, it supports the skin’s natural regeneration process.

Carrot oil and corn oil are also valuable sources of vitamin A, which helps protect skin cells and supports the skin’s natural renewal mechanisms.

Almond oil, magnesium sulfate, sunflower oil, and vitamin E help soothe irritated skin and lips. They contribute to maintaining optimal moisture levels and help protect the lips from further dehydration.

Shea butter is valued not only for its moisturizing properties but also for its ability to support skin regeneration and reinforce the skin’s natural protective barrier.

Urea helps the outer layer of the skin retain moisture more effectively, improving hydration while also helping to reduce sensations of itching and irritation.

Together, these carefully selected ingredients provide intensive care, long-lasting hydration, and effective protection for dry, sensitive, and stressed lips.

Long-lasting and intensive care

Our LPB® Lip Balm is distinguished by its long-lasting protective effect and intensive moisturizing care. It is also ideal for use during sports and outdoor activities. The balm can be applied comfortably underneath colored lipstick without affecting its appearance.

For best results, use LPB® Lip Balm daily and reapply as needed throughout the day. Spread the balm evenly over the lips and gently massage it in with your fingertip using light circular motions.

The balm forms a protective layer over dry and cracked areas of the lips, helping to shield them from further moisture loss and environmental stress. It may also be used preventively. For example, it helps protect the lips from cold weather during winter walks or from the drying effects of heated indoor air.

If your lips are already severely dry, we recommend the following application schedule:

  • Day 1: Apply approximately every one to two hours.
  • Day 2: Apply every two to four hours.
  • Day 3 and onwards: Apply as needed to maintain comfort and hydration.

Once your lips have fully recovered and regained their natural condition, you may discontinue use. The lips will not become dependent on the product, as LPB® Lip Balm does not cause a habituation or dependency effect.

General Information

In cases where dry skin and dry lips are caused by common environmental factors, the condition is usually temporary and can often be significantly improved within a few days to one or two weeks through the regular use of appropriate skincare and lip care products.

However, if symptoms do not improve, or if underlying skin disorders or specific medical treatments are contributing to skin instability, consultation with a qualified dermatologist is strongly recommended. Early professional assessment can help identify underlying causes and ensure appropriate treatment.
