Determining the Right Skin Care Products for Your Skin Type

Every person is unique, and the same applies to their skin. Their needs are individual, which also affects the optimal skincare. If you want to find skincare products that are perfectly tailored to your needs, you first need to determine your skin type. With a few targeted considerations, the answer can be found quickly.

Why Different Skin Care Products for Different Skin Types?

The skin has various structures and pigmentation. It is a reflection of genes, lifestyle, even emotions. To ensure that it always radiates health, appropriate care according to one's skin type is essential..

Four skin types are distinguished:

  • Normal Skin
  • Dry Skin
  • Oily Skin
  • Combination Skin

Normal Skin in Younger Years

The term "normal" is often subjective. What seems normal to one person may mean something entirely different to another. In dermatology, however, "normal skin" describes a healthy and balanced skin appearance.

Moisture and sebum balance are in harmony, so the skin neither appears dry nor oily. It is quite delicate and fine-pored, and environmental influences can rarely affect it. Normal skin is especially a blessing for younger individuals.

Dry Skin Due to Deficiency

Dry skin can occur either due to a lack of fat or a lack of moisture. If there is a deficiency of fat, a too weak sebum production is usually to blame. If, on the other hand, there is insufficient moisture, there is a low water-binding capacity.

The reasons for dry skin are diverse, including dry air, excessive consumption of alcohol and cigarettes, an unbalanced diet, or hormonal fluctuations.

Oily Skin with Excessive Sebum

The counterpart to dry skin is oily skin. It lacks no sebum – quite the opposite. It produces more than necessary, leading quickly to impurities. The skin appears overall very oily, especially in the T-zone. Additionally, it is poorly perfused, resulting in a pale complexion.

"Fatty skin" should definitely be presented to a dermatologist to exclude possible dermatological conditions, such as seborrheic dermatitis (seborrheic eczema).

In many cases, the genetics underlie oily skin. However, stress or hormonal fluctuations during puberty or pregnancy can also be the cause.

Combination Skin as a Combination of Two Skin Types

If someone has combination skin, they combine the characteristics of two skin types. Features of both dry and oily skin are present. The T-zone is predominantly associated with the oily skin type, while the cheeks belong to the dry type. This makes appropriate skincare somewhat more complicated, as the different zones have different needs.

How to Determine Your Skin Type

You can answer the question about your clothing size at the store off the cuff, but not about your skin type? Then it's high time to change that. Only those who know their type can give their skin the care it needs and deserves.

Gently cleanse your skin first and let it rest for an hour. Do not apply any cream during this time. Then take a look in the mirror and check which of the following descriptions applies to you.

  • Normal Skin: Your skin is well-perfused, fine-pored, and feels soft. It is smooth and even, and you rarely experience skin impurities. Your skin withstands external influences very well
  • Dry Skin: You often feel that your skin uncomfortably tightens. Scaly areas are not uncommon. Your skin often itches, and wrinkles quickly appear. You regularly feel the urge to moisturize your face.
  • Oily Skin: Your face shines, and impurities are your constant companions. Your pores are large and visible, and your complexion appears dull.
  • Combination Skin: Your T-zone quickly becomes oily and has large pores. Impurities occur here more frequently. Your cheeks, on the other hand, are noticeably finer-pored and rosier but tend to tighten quickly.

Important to know is that your skin type can change over the years. If you notice that your current skincare no longer meets your needs, then reassess your skin type and adjust your skincare routine accordingly.

Which Skincare Products Suit Your Skin Type?

In our range, we offer skincare products for normal to very dry skin. For example, our BL®-BasicLotion is suitable for normal to dry, sensitive, and slightly flaky skin. It reduces the uncomfortable feeling of tightness and itching symptoms. At the same time, it stabilizes the barrier function of the stratum corneum, preventing dehydration.

For dry skin with visible flakiness, we recommend our LL®-LipoLotion, which supports the skin's natural moisturizing factors. For very dry skin with pronounced and thickened scaling, our NCR®-NutrientCream is the best choice. If you suffer from allergies or frequently react sensitively to various ingredients or experience annoying itching symptoms, then opt for our CC®-CoolingCream. It is also suitable for polyallergics. This preparation is available both with menthol and for very sensitive skin without menthol. Note: Menthol reduces the sensation of itching symptoms.
